Tree Trimming

Tree Trimming Wellington

Premier Tree Surgeons trims trees across Wellington for homeowners, landlords, body corporates and businesses. Trimming deals with growth that is in the way: branches over the roof or gutters, limbs crowding a path or driveway, a canopy that has swallowed the view or the afternoon sun, or growth heading towards power lines. Our NZQA qualified arborists make each cut in the right place so the tree stays healthy and does not respond with a flush of weak regrowth. We are based in Karori, we cover the city and the wider Wellington region, and quotes are free.

What our tree trimming service includes

We trim trees in line with the arboriculture standards registered with NZQA, which means cutting back to a suitable growth point rather than leaving stubs, and never removing more of the canopy than the tree can cope with. A typical trimming job in Wellington involves one or more of the following:

  • clearing branches away from roofs, gutters, walls, decks and windows
  • lifting low canopies so you can walk, mow or park underneath
  • cutting back growth that shades solar panels or a vegetable garden
  • reducing growth that is heading towards overhead power or fibre lines
  • thinning a dense canopy so it catches less wind and lets more light through
  • shaping screening trees and hedgerow trees along a boundary
  • chipping and removing everything we cut, unless you want the mulch

We work from the ground, from ladders and by climbing, depending on the tree, and we protect the surfaces and plants underneath while we work.

Trimming, pruning or crown reduction: which one do you need?

The words get used loosely, but they describe different jobs. Trimming is about clearance and shape: cutting back the parts of the tree that are in the way. Tree pruning is about the health and structure of the tree itself, such as removing dead wood, thinning congested growth and training young trees. A crown reduction makes the whole tree smaller while keeping its natural shape, and is the right answer when a tree has outgrown its position.

If you ask for trimming and the tree really needs something else, we will tell you. Cutting a few branches off a tree that is far too big for its spot wastes your money, because the problem comes straight back.

Tree trimming in Wellington: what to expect

Why Wellington trees need a careful approach

Trees that have grown up in Wellington's wind have adapted to it. Their canopies are often denser on the sheltered side, their branches are shorter and stiffer than the same species would grow elsewhere, and the way the canopy distributes wind load is part of what keeps the tree standing. Trimming that strips the inside of the canopy and leaves tufts of foliage on the ends of long limbs, sometimes called lion-tailing, makes a tree more likely to fail in a gale, not less. In the coastal suburbs salt burn adds another stress, and a tree that has been cut hard in autumn can struggle to recover before winter. We trim with the wind in mind: taking weight off the ends of over-extended limbs, keeping the inner canopy, and removing no more than the tree needs.

How often should trees be trimmed?

It depends on the species and what the trimming is for. Fast growers such as willows, poplars and some eucalypts put on enough growth to need attention most years. Most garden trees are happy with a trim every two to three years. Clearance from power lines, roofs and gutters often needs to be checked yearly, because a branch that was half a metre clear last spring is touching the spouting this one. A regular cycle keeps each visit small and cheap; letting a tree go for a decade and then asking for it to be cut back hard is harder on the tree and on the budget.

What affects the price

The main factors are how tall the tree is and how much of it we have to climb, how many trees are involved, how much material comes off and has to be chipped, and how close the work is to buildings, glass, lines and neighbouring property. Access is the other big one on Wellington's hill sections. A tree we can park beside costs less to trim than one at the bottom of forty steps. We quote after seeing the tree, and the quote covers the work, the chipping and the clean-up.

Trees on a boundary

Branches that hang over from a neighbour's tree, or a shared tree on the fence line, are among the most common reasons people call us. Talk to your neighbour before any work is booked, and ask us if you are not sure what can be cut. Wellington City Council publishes guidance on trees on private property, and some trees are protected and cannot be trimmed without approval. We will tell you if that applies.

Frequently asked questions

Is tree trimming the same as pruning?

Not quite. Trimming is about clearance and shape; pruning is about the health and structure of the tree. Many jobs involve both, and we will explain which your tree needs.

Can you trim trees near power lines?

Yes, but there are rules about how close anyone can work to live lines, and in some cases the lines company must be involved first. We will tell you what applies before the job is booked.

Will trimming damage the tree?

Done properly, no. Cuts are made at a growth point so they seal over, and we never remove more of the canopy than the tree can tolerate in one go. Done badly, trimming leaves stubs, invites decay and causes weak regrowth, which is why the qualification matters.

Do you take the branches away?

Yes. Everything we cut is chipped and removed as part of the quote, or left as mulch if you prefer.

Do you work on rental and commercial properties?

Yes. We trim trees for landlords, property managers, body corporates and businesses as well as homeowners, and can work to a maintenance schedule.
